The “Kreutzer” Sonata: An Evolving Legacy

Beethoven composed his Op. 47 in 1803, originally dedicating it to George Bridgetower, an Afro-European virtuoso who premiered the work with Beethoven. Soon afterwards, Beethoven and Bridgetower quarreled over a woman and Beethoven re-dedicated the piece to Rodolphe Kreutzer. The "Kreutzer" name lived on with the piece.

The Washington Classical Review's Top Concerts of 2018!

The Washington Classical Review include two Shriver Hall Concert Series performances in its top picks of 2018! Hailed as "a connoisseur of sound", pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard's recital in March at Kraushaar Auditorium is included in its 'Top Ten Concerts' of the year, described as "a program of curiosities and revelations." And, cellist Truls Mørk and pianist Behzod Abduraimov's duo-recital in May at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation is highlighted as a 'Most Welcome Return.'

In Memoriam: Jephta Drachman

The Board of Directors and Staff of Shriver Hall Concert Series mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague Jephta Drachman. Jephta served as a Director from 1987 to 2017, including 20 years as President. SHCS thrives today because of her vision, energy, determination, and inspiring leadership. She raised the series' level of artistry, led a successful endowment campaign, and recruited a devoted patron base.
